Marrakech: Abdeljabbar Louzir, icon of Moroccan theater dies at the age of 88

Marrakech – Abdeljebbar Louzir, one of the pioneers of theater and comedy in Morocco, passed away in Marrakech on Wednesday at the age of 88 after a long and successful career in various artistic styles.

“Abdeljabbar Louzir died naturally this evening at the age of 88 in his house in the Daoudiate district of Marrakech,” said the son of the deceased, Mr. Ahmed Louzir, in a statement to MAP.

“The body of the deceased, who recently suffered from health problems caused by diabetes, which necessitated his transfer to the hospital, will be buried tomorrow at Bab Doukkala cemetery after the Ad-Dohr prayer”, added Mr. Louzir.

A native of the ocher city in 1932, Abdeljabbar Louzir is one of the leading artistic figures who have marked the artistic scene of the Kingdom in general and that of Marrakech in particular.

In 1948, the actor took his first steps on stage by integrating the famous “Al-Atlas” troupe of Moulay Abdelouahed Hassanein, the artistic school which brought out the greats of Moroccan theater.

This great man of the art scene has performed more than 80 plays here and elsewhere. His first role was in the play which achieved a great success namely: “El Fatmi et Daouia” (1951), which was performed in front of the late His Majesty Mohammed V at the Bahia Palace in Marrakech in 1957.

The late Abdeljebbar Louzir, who also shone brightly as an actor, alongside the late artist Mohamed Belkass, has performed several roles in a series of high-quality plays, television series and films, notably “Al-Haraz ”(1968),“ Hallaq Derb Al-Fouqara ”(1982), the comedy series“ Dar El-Warata ”and the film“ Ouled Mou ”(2009).

Abdeljabbar Louzir was also known for his activism for the independence of the country and his nationalist activities, as well as for his passage in the ranks of the team of the ocher city, Kawkab Athletic Club of Marrakech (KACM).
