The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) reports that more than 50 earthquakes have been recorded south of Playa Mizata in La Libertad following the strong earthquake that occurred last Wednesday.

Through a special seismology report, the state entity monitors the evolution of seismic activity off the coast of the department of La Libertad, after the earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale, with a depth of 13.3 kilometers and an intensity of IV-V on the Modified Mercalli scale in La Libertad, which occurred at 3:57 pm on August 28, 2024, 70.0 km south of Playa Mizata.

The MARN states that between 3:57 pm on August 28 and 10:00 am on September 1, 2024, the National Seismic Network of El Salvador has recorded a total of 59 earthquakes, of which 18 have been reported as felt by the population. The magnitudes of the aftershocks range between 2.6 and 4.8 on the Richter scale.

According to the characteristics of the recorded signals, the origin of this seismic activity is attributed to the subduction process between the Cocos and Caribbean tectonic plates.

According to the aftershock forecast, there is a moderate to high probability of continued seismic events in the area, with magnitudes between 2.5 and 5.0, during the next week. Although the probability of an earthquake of similar or greater magnitude than the main event is very low, its occurrence cannot be completely ruled out.
