Following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred at 3:57 this afternoon off the coast of La Libertad, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) has reported eight aftershocks, ranging from 3.8 to 4.6.
Given this situation, the General Directorate of Civil Protection issued a warning as a preventive measure for possible aftershocks in the coastal area, although the risk of impact by a tsunami is low for the Salvadoran territory, although there is always the possibility of aftershocks that could generate a slight increase in the height of the waves.
Civil Protection has recommended that holidaymakers refrain from entering the beach until further notice and stay away from the coast.
“We continue to constantly monitor this seismic activity. It is important to remain calm and stay informed by official sources. Let us take the necessary precautionary measures and heed the instructions of the authorities,” MARN head Fernando López posted on social media.
