Marloes’ (31) mother died of a heart attack: ‘Foam came out of her mouth’

The Passion is an event of the Heart Foundation where money is raised for life-saving heart research. Something that Marloes likes to commit to. “Actually I wanted to participate last year, because it was ten years after my mother’s death. Unfortunately I was just too late to register. That’s why I have to participate this year.”

Murmured from the room

The death of Marloes’ mother was very unexpected. “One day my mother woke up with a pain in her arm. Because she did not trust it, she made an appointment with the doctor. She was able to go back that same day. She then went back to bed, she does that often. We do that. were going to go into town together that day, so I waited for her to wake up so we could leave. “

Not much later, Marloes heard a murmur from the next room. Nothing strange, she thought at first. She often acted crazy with her mother and assumed that this was the case now. “I shouted, ‘Mom, act normal for a moment, wanting your attention is fine, but behave a little.’ We used to like that more often. When she didn’t respond I went to have a look. I immediately felt that it was wrong. “

After she opened the curtains, her mother’s condition quickly became apparent. “Foam came out of her mouth and her eyes were half open, but she didn’t respond to anything. I felt her heartbeat: it wasn’t there. I didn’t know what to do and ran to my neighbor in a panic, but she wasn’t home. Then I called 112. “

Everything was too late

Within minutes the ambulance arrived. “I felt it took hours. Once the ambulance arrived, it went very quickly. What exactly happened is still a vague memory. It was only later, when the ambulance personnel told me that my mother had died, everything slowly dawned on me. by.”

The paramedics made another resuscitation attempt, but to no avail. “Everything they still did was actually too late. The blow to her heart was so hard. Even if she survived, she was brain dead. A greenhouse plant.”

In the period that followed, Marloes found it difficult to comprehend what had happened. “I struggled with it for a long time. Felt an awful lot of sadness and felt that I couldn’t be myself. I was closed, bottled everything up. That sadness is really indescribable, I can’t put it into words. You don’t wish it on anyone.”

Time heals

Marloes is now doing well. “After 11 years I have been able to give it a place. A lot of sports has helped me to find peace in myself. If it is not possible once? Then I let myself go. Crying is not wrong, but it is not necessary every day. Flat After I passed away I could cry about every single thing every day. Now I know it will all be alright. Time heals. “

Marloes’ motto is therefore: “Dream your life, live your dream. You only have one, so go for it. In everything I do now, I think:” Take your chance, do it. ” Because it can only suddenly be over. ” She also wants to point out to others that supporting a good cause is of great value. “You have to experience it before you see what something like that does to you. But I don’t wish this on anyone, so I hope that with more research these kinds of situations can be reduced.”

On October 3, Marloes will join The Passion of the Dutch Heart Foundation. “In order to raise awareness for heart disease and as a tribute to my mother. Little is known among women about heart problems and I think more research should be done. More AEDs in the Netherlands, Europe, all over the world, so that more people get the help. can get what they need. “

During De Hartstocht you can choose to walk 5, 11, 20, 40 or 60 kilometers. Marloes: “60 kilometers a lot? Yes, I know, but of course it must be a challenge. In the beginning I thought: ‘Where do I start ?!’ Now I think: ‘bring it on, I can do this’. “
