No more tickets for “Markus Lanz”

Before Corona, “Markus Lanz” programs were recorded in front of an audience. However, this was stopped during the pandemic for infection protection reasons. It was then decided to continue the show permanently without studio guests. Producer and editor-in-chief Markus Heidemanns cited the reason that without an audience, the conversation situation between the moderator and the guests improved. “The conversations are much more dense.”

Who is Markus Lanz?

Markus Lanz is a presenter, journalist and author. Lanz was born on March 16, 1969 in Bruneck in South Tyrol (Italy) and grew up in Geiselsberg. He attended a humanistic monastery school and graduated from high school in Brixen in 1988. He then did his military service in the Italian military. Lanz has both German and Italian citizenship.

The ZDF talk show “Markus Lanz” reached around 1.45 million viewers in 2019, which corresponds to a market share of 12.3 percent. In 2020, an average of 1.8 million people tuned in. In his talk show, Lanz speaks weekly with guests from politics, entertainment and sports about current issues that affect society. The most prominent guests so far have included Bill Gates, Tony Blair, Bud Spencer and Karl Lagerfeld.

In addition to his talk show, Markus Lanz frequently hosts various programs on ZDF and makes documentaries. After Thomas Gottschalk’s resignation, he temporarily took over the moderation of “Wetten,dass…?” from October 2012 to December 2014.

Markus Lanz has a son from a previous relationship with the presenter Birgit Schrowange and two daughters from his marriage to Angela Gessmann. In February 2023, Lanz announced the separation through his lawyer. In addition to his television career, he is a photographer and author.
