Marko Hietala, known from the band Nightwish, opens up about his mental health problems in Vain lääää program.
Just life – program’s next episode will celebrate Marko Hietala’s day. The metal musician returns to the program in 2007, when Nightwish Dark Passion Play album was released. After the release of the album, a huge world tour followed, which ended only in the fall of 2009.
Hietala herself was not feeling well.
– Things were going from bad to worse. I was going through another bout of depression, which eventually led to me quitting alcohol completely in 2010. I started getting mental highs. The depression went on and on. I came from a tour and didn’t want to get out of bed for days, and there were small children at home. Yes, it started to have an effect, it can’t go like this. You had to look in the mirror and realize: you are the one to blame – others don’t complain about nothing, the musician says in the program.

Ilta asks more about Hietala’s alcohol use.
– The biggest realization was that this job used to be a lot of fun and we had a laugh. Now it was just a matter of hurrying to blur himself into semi-awareness, and afterwards it was a terrible feeling. Even if he hadn’t done anything, the feeling was terrible, the rocker answers.
– I made three unsuccessful attempts, but I didn’t give up. I knew all along with the failures that I had to get out of this.
