Marko Čermák: The Cult Comic Illustrator, Musician, and Pioneer of Czech Bluegrass

Documentary portrait. The illustrator and painter Marko Čermák came to the attention of Czech readers primarily in connection with the cult Czech comic book Rychlé šípy and the books of the writer Jaroslav Foglar, with whom he has collaborated since 1968. As a musician, a prominent figure in Czech bluegrass and country music, he was the founder and member of the groups Greenhorns and WhiteStars . Thanks to great interpretations and original lyrics, the songs of these groups are still alive across generations. The Paběrky group, which he founded for the interpretation of three-part vocals, has been playing on the Czech scene for 37 years. He was also a pioneer of playing the five-string banjo, built the first instrument himself, wrote the first Czech schools, and in 2007 was the first Czech to receive the American IBMA award for his contribution to this genre. Tramping and the love of being in nature is another important thing in the life of Marko Čermák. He cites a romantic vision of the world as his basic life situation, which is reflected in his visual work, musical texts and music itself.
