DJ MARKETS USA / Nasdaq indices start with record highs – Jackson Hole in view
NEW YORK (Dow Jones) – Wall Street started trading on Tuesday with moderate gains. The Nasdaq indices may have marked new all-time highs shortly after the starting bell, but there is a general degree of reluctance ahead of the central bankers’ meeting in Jackson Hole (from Thursday). For the Dow Jones Index, early business is up 0.2 percent to 35,402 points. The S&P 500 gains 0.2 percent and the Nasdaq Composite advances 0.3 percent.
The actors are already preoccupied with the speech by Federal Reserve President Jerome Powell on Friday. Most recently, the market has once again become convinced that the Fed could wait a little longer to start reducing its monthly bond purchases (tapering) after the US economic data was again rather weaker, and also because the corona pandemic continues to rage.
“Markets are struggling a little for direction after we’ve seen a huge surge,” said Mike Stritch, chief investment officer at BMO Wealth Management. “People are wondering what the next catalyst is to drive the market up, or whether the few risks that exist are enough to make the market as a whole pause.” “I’m less convinced that the Fed will make an important announcement this week,” said Stritch, adding, “I don’t know if this is the right time for the Fed to be overly aggressive.”
Dollar wenig verändert
After the increased willingness to take risks weighed on the dollar on Monday, the greenback is currently showing little change. The ING analysts believe that the downward pressure on the dollar should remain low before Powell’s appearance. They also point out that the president of the Dallas Fed branch, Robert Kaplan, has recently opened up prospects for tapering to be postponed. Oil prices are continuing their recovery from the previous day – albeit at a slower pace.
Little changed, but the price of gold is still above the $ 1,800 mark. The day before, with the weak dollar, it had climbed to its highest level in three weeks. In the bond market, yields are catching up on some of their recent levies.
Palo Alto nach Zahlen und Ausblick gesucht
In terms of individual stocks, Palo Alto shares skyrocketed 16.3 percent. The IT security company significantly increased its profits in its fourth quarter of business and thus exceeded market expectations. The company is also confident about the current financial year.
The shares of International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) (+ 0.3%) are also in focus. The German Lanxess takes over the biocide business of the US flavor manufacturer with a transaction volume of 1.3 billion dollars.
