Viromed Medical’s Virx® Nasal Spray will be launched on the German market on 19 October. The active components release nitric oxide (NO), which prevents the virus from entering the cell. According to studies, this should reduce the risk of infection for Covid-19 and reduce the viral load, at least in the nose. However, the virus can still enter through other entry points such as the throat.
Reduced viral load in the nose
In studies, the spray has shown good results in terms of reducing the SARS-CoV-2 viral load in the nose. A phase III study (DOI: 10.1016 / j.lansea.2022.100036) from India, published in July in The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia, involved 306 subjects aged 18 to 70 who had a positive PCR test SARS-CoV -2, but only mildly ill with Covid-19. A research team led by Dr. Monika Tandon of the pharmaceutical company Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Limited of Mumbai randomized the subjects in a 1: 1 ratio. Subjects in the intervention group self-administered two sprays of the NO-generating nasal spray into each nostril six times a day for seven days. The control group received a placebo in the form of a sea salt nasal spray.
