Marked Changes in Tongue Conditions, Recognize Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

SUKABUMIUPDATE.com – Type 2 diabetes is often noticed when it is severe enough. But according to the Cleveland Clinic, signs of type 2 diabetes can be seen from the tongue.

“A burning mouth or tongue can be a warning sign of diabetes,” notes the Cleveland Clinic. This can be due to thrush or a fungal infection of the mouth and tongue.

Launching Express as reported by Suara.com, high blood sugar levels in the mouth and saliva make the mouth the perfect environment for fungal growth.

“People with diabetes face a higher than normal risk of oral health problems,” says the Cleveland Clinic.

“If blood sugar is not well controlled, it is likely that oral health problems will arise,” they added.


In a study published in Diabetes in Control, the tongue was one of the indicators of type 2 diabetes.

“This is the first study to examine the efficacy and value of tongue diagnosis in type 2 diabetes. The results show that people with type 2 diabetes develop a bluish tongue and thicker tongue hairs,” write the investigators.

In another study published in Medicine, it was also stated that tongue problems associated with type 2 diabetes present with various oral complications, such as multiple tongue, xerostomia, salivary dysfunction, etc.

When a person has type 2 diabetes, the body cannot use insulin effectively to carry glucose into the cells. This condition causes the body to depend on other energy sources in the tissues, muscles and organs which actually creates various symptoms.

Other common signs of diabetes are constant hunger, lack of energy, weight loss, excessive thirst, and frequent urination.
