Mark Zuckerberg expands his Hawaii holdings to an additional 150 acres on the island of Kauai. Much to the annoyance of the locals: A petition against the Facebook founder goes viral.

Since 2014, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has been buying more and more land on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. When he bought 283 hectares of land at the time, it was a question of small plots that are inhabited by the so-called Kamaaina families. These are descendants of the Hawaiian natives, who accordingly cannot produce any title deeds about the land.

According to media reports, Zuckerberg tried to sue these families seven years ago – it was not until the negative media coverage in 2017 that he dropped the complaints and apologized with a guest article in the local newspaper “The Garden Island”.

Zuckerberg continues to buy land

Since then, Zuckerberg has not been a welcome guest on the Pacific island. In 2019, according to News Week, the locals accused him of continuing to try to evict the residents from their land through bogus companies and the resident professor Carlos Andrade. A spokeswoman denied this at the time. But his new purchase of 242 acres on the same island leaves a taste for the Hawaiians.

The property was sold by Waioli Corporation, a non-profit organization that has been committed to preserving historic sites in the Pacific Islands since the 1840s. Known as the Lepeuli ahupua’a, it is home to several “reef, marine, bird, flora and historical collections in their unchanged original habitat,” according to the company on its website. Sam Pratt, President of Waioli, told The Garden Island: “We know that Mark and Priscilla will act as responsible stewards of Lepeuli now and in the future.”

Allegation of neo-colonialism

The residents of Kauai started a petition against the Facebook founder and his wife months ago and accused him of “neocolonialism”, the university professor Kapua Sproat told the Guardian. The petition went into the last one due to the renewed land purchase Go viral for days. Via the platform change.org, residents demand, “Stop Mark Zuckerberg from colonizing Kauai!” The description reads, “Mark Zuckerberg is the sixth richest man in the world … and he is suing the Native Hawaiians in Kauai their land so that he can build a villa. ”

They find it inhuman that he only lives two months a year in this villa and wants to drive the residents off their land in return. Zuckerberg already owns a $ 83 million palace behind a wall on the island. He himself assured the Waioli Corporation that there would be no lawsuits. As of Wednesday, 1,015,194 million people have signed the petition.
