Zuckerberg continues to buy land
Since then, Zuckerberg has not been a welcome guest on the Pacific island. In 2019, according to News Week, the locals accused him of continuing to try to evict the residents from their land through bogus companies and the resident professor Carlos Andrade. A spokeswoman denied this at the time. But his new purchase of 242 acres on the same island leaves a taste for the Hawaiians.
The property was sold by Waioli Corporation, a non-profit organization that has been committed to preserving historic sites in the Pacific Islands since the 1840s. Known as the Lepeuli ahupua’a, it is home to several “reef, marine, bird, flora and historical collections in their unchanged original habitat,” according to the company on its website. Sam Pratt, President of Waioli, told The Garden Island: “We know that Mark and Priscilla will act as responsible stewards of Lepeuli now and in the future.”
Allegation of neo-colonialism
The residents of Kauai started a petition against the Facebook founder and his wife months ago and accused him of “neocolonialism”, the university professor Kapua Sproat told the Guardian. The petition went into the last one due to the renewed land purchase Go viral for days. Via the platform change.org, residents demand, “Stop Mark Zuckerberg from colonizing Kauai!” The description reads, “Mark Zuckerberg is the sixth richest man in the world … and he is suing the Native Hawaiians in Kauai their land so that he can build a villa. ”
