Mark Zuckerberg has apologized to children harmed by the use of his social media. The Facebook founder did this on Wednesday in a hearing before the US Senate.
Zuckerberg had to come to the Senate, where lawmakers questioned him and the CEOs of X, Snap and TikTok, among others, about the negative impact of social media. “I know you don’t mean it like that, but you have blood on your hands,” said Republican Lindsey Graham. “You have a product that kills people.”
Other members of Congress also spoke out very critically about social media during the hearing. According to the White House, Meta and other tech platforms are having a “devastating” impact on young people. The congressmen cited examples of children being bullied online and young people being blackmailed and extorted with nude photos.
After a video was shown of children talking about their problems, Senator Josh Hawley asked Zuckerberg to apologize to the victims. The Meta CEO then turned to the families present in the public gallery and addressed them. “I’m sorry for everything you’ve been through.” He promised to invest more in online security.
