Mark Uth’s Comeback Journey: From Injury to Regional League and Beyond

Mark Uth had to put last season behind him: The 32-year-old only made five appearances and 182 minutes of play as a long-term injured player at 1. FC Köln. The current season didn’t start particularly promising either. In the first round of the cup against VfL Osnabrück (3-1 after extra time) he suffered a muscle stiffness. It became a lengthy affair.

But now Uth is an option again before the hammer weeks (in Leverkusen, against Mönchengladbach, in Leipzig). On Saturday, October 7, 2023, 6 p.m., Uth is scheduled to play for the U21 team of 1. FC Köln in the Regionalliga West.

The game will then be against FC Wegberg-Beeck in the Franz Kremer Stadium. Florian Dietz (25) is also expected to gain match practice with the U21s months after tearing his cruciate ligament on Saturday. “We want to get Mark and Flo into normal games through the U21s. There are still differences between games and training,” explained FC coach Steffen Baumgart.

In any case, Uth is excited about his first missions – especially with the professionals. The derby at Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday (October 8, 2023, 3:30 p.m.) comes too early, but there is still a derby on the schedule after the international break…

Germany will first play in the USA during the international break on October 14th and against Mexico on October 18th. Uth wants to use this time to put the finishing touches on his comeback. On Sunday, October 22nd, at 3:30 p.m., Borussia Mönchengladbach will come to the Rhein-Energie-Stadion.

Uth said in a club interview a few days ago: “I feel very good. I have also made up for my strength deficits and now have to train for two to three weeks at a time before I can play again. But the pain is completely gone. So everything is wonderful. The plan is for me to be back after the international break against Gladbach.”

He doesn’t want to overstate the bad start to the season: “We should keep calm, not paint the devil on the wall and believe in the plan that the coach gives us. Then we will score again.”

Uth doesn’t believe in activism or panic: “We didn’t do brilliantly for two years and then change the plan now. That does not make sense. We know that it works like that, we just haven’t been able to get it 100 percent on the pitch in the last few weeks. We stated this clearly in the meetings and need to change it.”

He is really looking forward to his appearance against Gladbach: “Of course I had hoped for it earlier, but I am very happy. I think it will be very special because it is a derby. The plan is for me to be there again. Celebrating with the boys in the dressing room after a home derby win would be my dream.”
