Foreign media, including the BBC, announced that Mark Rutte’s government had fallen in the Netherlands, leaving a man who loudly supported Ukraine and its president Volodymyr Zelensky at the head of the Dutch kingdom. However, his government does not end because of the war in Ukraine, but because of disagreements over migration policy.

The government of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte is falling after a year and a half of its existence. The four coalition parties could not agree on the shape of the migration policy. The BBC recalledthat Rutte’s conservative VVD party sought to limit the influx of asylum seekers after last year’s row over overcrowded migration centers.
“This week, Mr Rutte tried to push through a plan that included limiting the number of relatives of war refugees allowed into the Netherlands to just 200 per month. However, smaller coalition partners Christian Union, a pro-family party, and the socially liberal D66 were strongly opposed.
Early elections will probably take place this autumn, i.e. in a few weeks.
Rutte has governed with various coalition parties continuously since 2010.
Since the beginning of Russian aggression in Ukraine in February, Rutte has clearly taken the side of the attacked country and praised not only the work of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he called a brave and courageous man during his visit to the Netherlands in May of this year, who has become a symbol of what the country can do and its inhabitants as they fight for their existence, freedom and future. We all admire you for that”.
“This is an unjust war against everything we stand for. It is a war against freedom, democracy and the rule of law in our part of the world. That is why we stand on the side of the Ukrainian people and that is why you can count on our unwavering support. Russia cannot win this war and must be held accountable for all the crimes of aggression and injustice that it perpetrates against the people of Ukraine day after day in this terrible war. So where else should we meet but here in The Hague, the legal capital of the world. We know since the downing of flight MH17 in the Netherlands that justice does not come automatically,” Rutte declared in May 2023.

In February 2023 Rutte went to Kyivwhere he dealt not only with Zelenský.
“And as always, these are meaningful and powerful negotiations. I am very grateful to you for that. Ukraine has a lot to thank the Netherlands for: society, government, parliament. It is the support of our state and the personal leadership of the prime minister, and that is encouraging,” said the Ukrainian president to the head of the Dutch government during a joint meeting with media representatives after the talks in Kyiv.
In 2023 alone, the Netherlands has earmarked financial support of approximately 2.5 billion euros for this purpose. In addition, he thanked Zelenskyi for the fact that the Dutch government decided to provide Ukraine with Leopard tanks. Last but not least, Zelenskyj thanked for the Dutch efforts to prepare an international tribunal for Russian war criminals.
