The Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, has said that the members of the alliance will not send troops to Ukraine, despite the support that Russia receives from countries such as North Korea. This was said in an interview with Fox News, reported by Focus.
“I think it would be unwise to do that,” Rutte said bluntly in response to a question about the possibility that NATO would send its troops to Ukraine. He specified that the aim was to avoid a full-scale conflict where the members of the Alliance would be active participants in the war.
Aid to Ukraine instead of direct intervention
Rutte noted that NATO’s main task now is to ensure that Ukraine can continue to defend itself and obtain a position of strength necessary for any future negotiations with Russia.
“What needs to be done is to make sure that Ukrainians can continue to fight this battle. Ukraine should be at the negotiating table, but only when it is in a position to let them benefit from these negotiations. At the moment they are at a disadvantage,” explained the Secretary-General.
European and American coordination
Rutte also emphasized the importance of increased support from European countries for Ukraine, while emphasizing the key role of the US and its defense capability.
“European countries need help from the US and its powerful defense industry. I am sure that the combined efforts of NATO, President Trump and other leaders can bring Putin to the negotiating table,” said Rutte.
In the end, Russian President Vladimir Putin must be convinced that continuing the war is not in his interest, according to the NATO secretary general.
A general approach to conflict
Rutte said he hopes that with Ukraine in a stronger position and coordinated efforts with NATO countries, the necessary pressure will be created on Russia. He also agreed with President Donald Trump that Europe should play a more active role in supporting Kiev.
Although NATO prohibits the use of its troops in Ukraine, the Alliance remains committed to helping Kiev gain a better position in the conflict and create conditions for effective negotiations.
