The prime minister lost his mother in the middle of the first corona wave last May. “She was physically weak and had been in the nursing home for a number of years, because otherwise she would fall easily”, Mark Rutte tells Linda. “Then this happened and it is as intense as you can not reach”, referring to the closing of the nursing homes. Eventually his brother called him and said that their mother was suddenly very bad. “Then the protocol was that if it was acute, you could go there. So I went there immediately at night. And the day after my sister sat down and at the end of that day she died.”

“Suddenly something had happened”, continues Mark Rutte. “It wasn’t a corona, they had tested it yet. (…) But then I talked to my sister and my brother: ‘Guys, with that job of mine, there is a risk that there might be a photographer in the bushes the funeral.’ They really wouldn’t have taken that, and neither would I. “
