The almost 120 guitars of British musician Mark Knopfler, known from the band Dire Straits, have been auctioned for a total amount of more than 8.8 million pounds, the equivalent of more than 10 million euros. Part of the proceeds goes to charities.

The instruments went under the hammer on Wednesday at Christie’s auction house in London.

The most, £693,000, was paid for the 1959 Gibson Les Paul. Another hit was the 1983 Les Paul that Knopfler used for the Dire Straits hits Money for Nothing and Brothers in Arms and which he played in 1985 during the legendary Live Aid concert. £592,000 was paid for that guitar.

The musician previously told the BBC that he hopes the new owners will play the guitars. “I don’t think it’s very good for them if they stay in a suitcase all their lives.”

Although Knopfler has now parted with his guitars, he did not rule out purchasing new instruments with the proceeds from the auction. “I guess I’m not immune to temptation.”
