Mark Knopfler re-records one of his songs together with 54 artists, including big names such as Bruce Springsteen and Sting. The British musician is donating all proceeds to two charities.
The Dire Straits singer and guitarist takes his number Going Home: Theme of the Local Hero from 1983 with dozens of world-famous guitarists.
In addition to Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Brian May (Queen), Ronnie Wood (The Faces and The Rolling Stones), Slash (Guns N’ Roses) and David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) are participating. The supergroup calls itself Guitar Heroes.
The instrumental song opens with the last recording of Jeff Beck, who passed away last year. The special recording also features Roger Daltrey (The Who) on harmonica, Sting on bass guitar and Ringo Starr (The Beatles) on drums.
In addition to re-recording the rock song, eight guitars with signatures of the participants will also be auctioned for charities. All proceeds go to Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America.
“More than anything, I want to thank everyone for the great response. I really had no idea it would turn out like this,” Knopfler said in a press release. The song, which is nine minutes long, will be released on March 15.
