Mark de J. definitively sentenced to 20 years for the murder of Koen Everink | NOW

The Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that the sentence of twenty years in prison imposed on Mark de J. for the murder of Koen Everink is final. Everink was killed in his home in Bilthoven in March 2016.

The businessman’s murder caused quite a stir. Everink was killed with multiple knife stabs while his daughter was sleeping upstairs.

Everink, 42, was a successful businessman and made headlines earlier in 2012 after being beaten by kickboxer Badr Hari at a party in what was then the Amsterdam Arena.

A few weeks after Everink’s Body was found, a close friend of his, Mark de J., was arrested. The tennis teacher denied involvement in Everink’s death, but the evidence against him piled up.

For example, Everink’s gold watch was found with a family member of De J. who had hidden it there at De J.’s request. In addition, the man had taken one of the knives Everink was killed with to the victim’s home and, prior to the murder, he searched for search terms such as ‘fatal knife stab’ and ‘knife stab in the back’.

The gambling debt De J. had with Everink is seen as the motive. The outstanding amount of 66,000 euros must be repaid by the man to the Everink family.

Man has always denied

De J. himself has always denied the murder. He claims to have been in Everink’s home the night of the murder, but was kidnapped by four men when he left home. They would have been responsible for Everink’s death.

However, no evidence has been found for this statement by the man. The fact that De J. always insisted that he was not responsible for Everink’s death aggravated his sentence and earned him a prison sentence of twenty years on appeal, after an earlier conviction of eighteen years. A punishment that is now final.
