Does anyone actually remember Mark Carney? The former governor of the Bank of England was carried to Brookfield Asset Management by his golden parachute. Then a position at Bloomberg became available. He should actually have his hands full, but there is still plenty of time to make disparaging comments about his former political opponents. Most recently, at a conference of like-minded people attended by Tony Blair, he said that Liz Truss had turned Great Britain into an Argentina on the English Channel. In an effort to fit what was happening there into the eternal battle between supposedly progressives and supposedly extreme right-wing populists, he completely forgot the role of the central bank and supervisory authorities. The Bank of England began raising interest rates far too late. The supervisory authority considered the pension funds’ complex derivative strategies to be unproblematic. But no grand narrative can be spun from this. Maybe Carney hasn’t given up on his dream of entering politics after all.
