Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia insisted in court Friday that she doesn’t remember whether she told former President Donald Trump to invoke martial law to stay in power.
The shocking statement came amid an administrative hearing in Atlanta on whether the far-right congresswoman and close Trump ally can be barred from serving in Congress for supporting an insurrection against the United States.
Andrew Celli, a lawyer for Free Speech for the People, the group challenging Greene’s candidacy, asked him directly whether or not he wanted Trump to remain in power by imposing martial law, which includes the temporary suspension of regular laws. and the imposition of government by the military.
“I don’t remember,” Greene replied.
When asked whether or not that constituted a denial, the congresswoman stood her ground.
“I don’t remember,” she said.
After a break, Greene was asked again whether or not he advocated the imposition of martial law, and again said he didn’t remember.
Greene responded in the same way to several other questions from his interrogators on Friday, saying he did not recall particular statements. including his prior support for the execution of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Although there is no publicly available information that Greene herself advocated the idea, her refusal to respond is notable. Because she is testifying under oath, she may be found to have perjured herself if she adamantly denies something that ultimately turns out to be true.
Former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn previously said Trump should impose martial law in an appearance on Newsmax in late December 2020, that he also advocated Trump directly.
Under Article 14(3) of the United States Constitution, “no person” who has taken the oath of office and served as a member of Congress “shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion.”
Greene had previously tried to stop the hearing from taking place, but a federal judge in Georgia ruled on Monday that the challenge could go ahead. She is the first congresswoman to testify under oath about the events of January 6.
