Marius Gersbeck: Hertha’s Self-Taught Goalkeeper Returns to First Team Training After Controversial Summer

Marius Gersbeck is Hertha’s self-taught goalkeeper, who made his Bundesliga debut in 2013 at the age of just 18 in a league win against Jürgen Klopp’s Dortmund in which he helped his team to a 2-1 away win. After that, however, he didn’t get any more chances in Berlin, and finally in 2019 he transferred to Karlsruhe, from where he returned to Pál Dárdai’s team in the summer.

The 28-year-old Gersbeck has certainly arrived as the number one goalkeeper, as all three of Hertha’s routine goalkeepers, Alexander Schwolow, Rune Jarstein and Oliver Christensen, left after the relegation from the Bundesliga, leaving only three inexperienced youngsters in the position: Tjark Ernst (20), Robert Kwasigroch (19) and Tim Goller (18). However, Gersbeck put the coaching staff led by Dárdai in a difficult situation with his summer mishap, which made it necessary to start the season without a sure point in goal.

What happened?

On July 16, during Hertha’s training camp in Austria, Gersbeck fought in the street with a 22-year-old man, breaking several bones. The Berlin team suspended the football player after the incident, who had to stand trial in Austria on charges of grievous bodily harm. The trial took place two weeks ago, at which the goalkeeper admitted his guilt and apologized to the victim. The court fined him 40,000 euros, so Gersbeck got away cheaply, as he could have been sentenced to five years in prison.

Hertha CEO Thomas Herrich said after the sentencing: they will discuss what happened and he does not rule out that Gersbeck will get a second chance at the club. That has now happened, he was able to return to first team training on Monday.

Pál Dárdai: You have to be careful!

“For now, we have no concrete plans, we just had our first meeting today, we also spoke with the team,” said the Kicker in his columns, Pál Dárdai about the goalkeeper’s return, and then warned Marius Gersbeck. – The club made a decision in which the coach was also involved. Marius should be careful in the future. If Gersbeck catches up physically, it’s only good for the team. Goalkeeper coach Andreas Menger will decide whether he can keep goal in the match against Tennis Borussia.
