The accident happened this morning about 22 kilometers southwest of the island of Heligoland, Germany’s Central Maritime Emergencies Authority said, adding that several ships were currently searching for survivors.
One person was rescued and is being treated, the administration reports.
The Verity, which is believed to have sunk, was registered in Great Britain and was on its way from Bremen to Lincolnshire, England. The second ship “Polesie” is registered in the Bahamas and went from Hamburg to Spain.
“Verity” was a smaller ship, its length was 91 meters, while “Polesie” was 190 meters long. “Polesie” is still afloat with 22 people on board, the authority said.
