Dutch sailors Maxime Jonker and Marit Bouwmeester were unable to improve on a chaotic fourth day of the World Championships in the Ilca 6 class in Argentina. Jonker is in fifth place in the rankings, Bouwmeester dropped from eighth to fifteenth place.

“It couldn’t have been much worse,” said four-time world champion Bouwmeester after the race Along the Line and Surrounding Areas. “It’s all hands on deck tomorrow.”

In Mar del Plata, more than a hundred participants sail in two groups. In Monday’s two races, Bouwmeester finished 22nd and 24th in her group. Jonker did slightly better with a 26th and a 3rd place.

Mirthe Akkerman dropped from 20th to 29th in the joint rankings, Roos Wind maintained 42nd. The Danish Anne-Marie Rindom is still in the lead.

Dubious matches

“They were very dubious matches and I didn’t handle them very well,” Bouwmeester said. “It already started this morning. There was a very long delay because a sailor was participating who was not allowed to participate. So all scores had to be revised.”

“Furthermore, we first had wind from the north and later from the south. So no one crossed the starting line. And they had also laid the line crooked. It was one big chaos. Perhaps I expected a little too much that the starting committee I was going to cancel everything, but that didn’t happen. So I lost the overview a bit.”

One Olympic ticket

The Dutch sailors are not only fighting for a good ranking at the World Championships, but the only Olympic ticket available for our country in the ILCA6 class is also at stake. The scores of this World Cup and those of the previous one last August in Scheveningen count towards this.

Bouwmeester finished fourth at the previous World Cup; Jonker, Akkerman and Wind did not score any points.

There are more complaints about the conditions at the World Cup in Argentina. “I won’t be so quick to blame the matches, but today it was questionable. And it is of course annoying when a major championship is decided with moments like this. But it is also: how do you deal with it yourself? I didn’t do very well.”

The World Championship lasts until Wednesday and basically consists of ten races and a medal race. “It will be a battle tomorrow,” said Bouwmeester. “I think we will do three games. I am not in a very good position with my fifteenth place, but there are still a lot of points and we are all still close to each other.”
