Mariska: Living Proudly with Urostomy and Colostomy Since 1996 – My Story of Resilience

I am Mariska, 45 years old and the proud owner of a urostomy since 1996 and a colostomy in 1997. I deliberately say proud, because for me this was a necessary solution that allowed me to move on with my life. I know it’s not like that for everyone. But I also want to show the positive side of it. I immediately took care of my stoma myself. I’ve had few problems with it.

I received both stomas as a result of Cauda Syndrome. My abnormalities resemble those of spina bifida. But it’s just like that and it’s just not like that. I always fall between two stools. My deviation causes a lot of misunderstanding. I have been through a lot and I have always had to fight to explain to people how and what. But I have always continued to look on the bright side. This is also thanks to my fantastic parents, sister, brother-in-law and their children, who have always been there for me and still are. I have written down my life story over the past few years. Who knows, maybe I might release it someday. No matter how difficult it sometimes seems to have or get a stoma. Believe in yourself!
