Mariska will never forget the day of the stroke. “I wanted to drive out of here, meanwhile called someone but when I wanted to say my name it came out weird. I went back inside and told Frans and the boys that I wasn’t feeling very well. I had the feeling that I had a thick tongue: I could talk, but it took me more effort.”

It was not immediately clear to the doctors what was going on. They suspected an allergic reaction, but a day later the fork turned out to be different. “The next morning an MRI scan was made on which they saw that I had had a cerebral infarction, a closure due to a blood clot. In the meantime I also had more symptoms: my mouth was crooked and one arm was paralyzed.”

Maris is doing much better now. The question is whether she will ever be the same again. “But keeping up thirty balls is no longer necessary.”
