“Mario Movie Surpasses $500 Million Mark, Becomes Best-Selling Video Game Adaptation in History”

The adventures of Mario, Luigi, Bowser and Peach no longer only conquer the hearts of their fans on Nintendo consoles, but now they do so on the big screen. The new movie about the Italian plumber, which is still on the billboard in Colombia, surpassed US$500 million at the worldwide box office, which catapulted it to the top of the list of best-selling video game movie adaptations in history.

The film was animated by Nintendo and Illumination, the studio behind the success of the Minions, and has surpassed other great video game sagas such as ‘Warcraft’ and ‘Pokemon’, which accompany it in the top three of the most successful.

It should be noted that the Mario and Luigi film premiered on April 5, so it only took ten days to reach first place. Also, that its premiere was going to be on December 21, 2022, but it was postponed to April 7, 2023 and finally it was brought forward two days.

An earlier Hollywood effort, a 1993 live-action film, was panned and has frequently appeared on lists of the worst movies ever made.

The current Super Mario divided critics, with only 56% of critics recommending the film, according to RottenTomatoes. It fared better with regular moviegoers, where it scored a 96% overall.

Other great sagas in the history of video games such as ‘Sonic’, ‘Prince of Persia’ and ‘Resident Evil’ make up the top 10. Of this list, eight films are ‘live-action’, only with the exception of Mario and ‘Angry Birds ‘.

Universal Pictures, for its part, is the distributor of the two highest grossing films, while Warner Bros, Sony Pictures and Paramount share the rest of the list.
