The Andretti Autosport team has not yet even been officially admitted to Formula 1, but Mario Andretti, 1978 world champion and father of team boss Michael, already has two drivers in mind. The Italian American said so in an interview with Soy Engine.
Last February, the successful racing family announced it had signed up to become the eleventh team in Formula 1. Chief Executive Stefano Domenicali later said he was satisfied with the ten teams currently competing in the premier class. F1 has mainly focused on car brands, such as the future collaboration between Audi and Sauber and the failed deal between Porsche and Red Bull Racing. Meanwhile, Andretti Autosport is building a completely new venue to prepare for a possible entry into Formula 1. Michael Andretti said two weeks ago that he was still very close.

Alonso to Hertha
“One of the riders that we can say with 99% certainty that will be part of the team is Colton Herta,” said Mario Andretti. “However, he needs someone with more experience at his side. This would make the team much more complete and that’s what is being discussed now as part of the plan. The main objective is to have a highly experienced rider alongside a new talent and have at least one North American driver on the team”. When asked if Alonso is one of the candidates, Mario replied: “Of course it’s very likely. His experience is incalculable and he would be great for us, so we’ll see. I think he wants to keep racing and he’s still at his prime.” .”
