Shohei Ohtani wasn’t enough to keep the Los Angeles Angels from hitting their sixth straight season with a losing record.
Ohtani received Jarred Kelenic’s homer that tied the score in the seventh inning and Mitch Haniger drove in the lead run with a single in a four-run eighth inning off the bullpen that propelled the Mariners over the Angels 4-1 on Sunday. .
The Japanese allowed one run and five hits in seven innings, in which he struck out 10 and did not walk. He remained 9-2 and lowered his ERA to 3.18 with 156 strikeouts and 44 walks in 130 1/3 innings. Ohtani hit double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this season and for the second start in a row.
He went 3-1 at bat and is batting .258 with 98 RBIs and 45 home runs, one behind co-leaders Vladimir Guerrero of Toronto and Salvador Perez of Kansas City. He only has one home run since Sept. 10.
Seattle won seven of eight games and will enter the final week of the season two games off the second wild-card berth with six games left.
For the Angels the Venezuelan Luis Rengifo 3-0. The Dominican Juan Lagares 1-0.
