Mariners Looking At Corner Infield Upgrades More Than Second Base

The Seattle Mariners are gearing up for an active offseason, focusing on bolstering their infield. The team clearly recognizes the need for upgrades, considering they have only J.P. Crawford locked in as a starter.

Executives are particularly focused on improving at third base and have shown interest in bringing back veteran options like Justin Turner or Carlos Santana.

While the Mariners have internal options available at second base, such as Ryan Bliss or prospects like Cole Young, the priority appears to be strengthening the hot corner.

Money matters in Seattle, however. “Plan Z” is what GM Jerry Dipoto calls dealing from their excellent, young starting pitching—a move he’s reluctant to make. Despite economic limitations, they are expected to have around $16 million to orchestrate trades.

They’re exploring various trade options. Alec Bohm of the Phillies, Brett Baty from the Mets, and perhaps even the pricier third baseman Nolan Arenado of the Cardinals are potential targets. However, any trade involving a starting pitcher would likely open up more options.

The Mariners aren’t shying away from a challenge but are cautious about sacrificing future talents.

A good example is center fielder James Outman who believe’s he can contribute as an everyday starter in the Major Leagues and showcase his power potential.

“I believe in myself,” Outman said. “I know what I can bring. I want to show I can be an everyday player,

Seattle’s willingness to make a splash through trade depends on finding the right value proposition. For now, they seem content to explore multiple avenues to improve their infield for the upcoming season.
