From today, the leader of the French far-right, Marine Le Pen, is facing the possibility of being deprived of the right to stand for election.
Specifically, as reported by Politico, Paris Court prosecutors requested that the head of the National Alarm (RN) party be found guilty of embezzlement, sentenced to prison, and barred from running for public office – including the French presidency – for the next five years and be fined 300,000 euros.
Le Pen and 24 others – including current and former French lawmakers and MEPs – are accused of illegally using European Parliament funds to pay parliamentary aides on party affairs instead of EU affairs from 2004 to 2016.
Le Pen and her co-defendants have all denied the charges. “Their aim is to prevent me from being a candidate in 2027 and anyone who doesn’t understand that is blind and deaf,” Le Pen said.
It is also noted that prosecutors have asked for the sentence to be carried out immediately, even if Le Pen appeals.
“It is clear that the only thing the prosecutors wanted was to exclude Marine Le Pen from political life,” Le Pen told reporters after the court adjournment.
