At the end of 2023, record companies Prima Classic an album was released under the wing Essencein which the song Marina Rebecca together with the Wroclaw Opera Orchestra and conductor Marko Boemi, she recorded thirteen well-known arias for soprano from different periods and operas.
The album reads: Chochosan aria from J. Puccini’s operas Madama Butterfly, Margaret’s aria from A. Boito’s opera “Mephistopheles”, Adriana’s aria from F. Chile’s opera “Adriana Lecouvre”, Lisa’s aria from P. Tchaikovsky’s opera “The Queen of Spades”, Magda’s aria from J. Puccini’s opera “Swallow”, Tosca’s aria from J. Puccini’s opera “Tosca”, Madalena’s aria from U. Giordano’s opera “Andre Chenier”, Mizette’s waltz from J. Puccini’s opera “Bohème”, Ned’s ballad from R. Leoncavallo’s opera “Pajaci”, Mimi’s aria from J. Puccini’s opera “Bohème”, Nara’s aria from A. Dvořák’s opera “Nara”, Lauretta’s aria from J. Puccini’s opera “Gianni Skiki” and Valli’s aria from A. Catalani’s opera “Valli”.
Tvarts has already received widespread critical acclaim, too Juris Grinevičs in the magazine “Mūzikas Saule” writes:
“There is an amazing perfection of vocal technique in almost all aspects, however, the particularly expressive chest register, which is very rare for sopranos, is particularly captivating. Unusually expressive piano dynamics, but also power in the upper register with a brilliant sound in the highest sphere.
As always, excellent phrasing rooted in perfect breathing technique. (..) With her voice, she is able to reflect the subtlest currents of the soul, to truly transform into an image. Basically, the album depicts thirteen different women from the naïve Lauretta (“Gianni Skiki”, with which the sopranos begin to get to know Puccini’s music), but how suggestively Marina Rebecca plays it! And the opposite – Tosca. All the heroines are united by a special feminine charm, subtle but irresistible eroticism, which makes these characters so believable and convincing. Only rare female artists can do this, because usually the game is limited to better or worse sung notes.”
In addition to the album recordings, we also offer Rūta Paula’s telephone interview with Marina Rebekah.
Marina Rebeka: Creating a program is a long process. Each album has its own program, its own idea. In this case, I decided that I should make an album of the most famous soprano arias that I currently have in my repertoire, and that I will hopefully be singing in the next ten years. The name of the program had to be chosen.
This is the essence of opera music, because they are arias that a person who does not know opera could listen to, and to whom one could then say – here is the essence of soprano arias.
Ruta Paula: And as a result, a selection of 13 arias has been created – very contrasting and diverse. On what principles did you organize it?
Marina Rebeka: There are roles that have already been sung on stage, such as Mimi, Mizete, Chochosan, Neda – there is already experience there, but there are operas that have not been sung, but are close to me and I really like them, for example Liza’s aria. Participation in the production of Boito’s opera “Mephistopheles” was planned for this year, but failed. Of course, the role of Toska has been offered to me very often, but I keep turning it down, maybe after five or six years I will accept it.
The main principle was that all these arias should be famous. Tchaikovsky’s Liza aria may not be so popular, but I once sang this aria in concerts, so it is close to my heart.
(..) It was unexpected that there would be such support for the album, so many good reviews. Usually critics are interested in something that has not been written, something new, completely unheard, but this is an album where everything has been heard, known. The album came out, I thought there wouldn’t be any big criticism and nobody would be interested, but it’s not. I am very happy and surprised about that.
December 21, when we record this conversation, is a rather significant day. A magazine was published in France today Tuning forkand has a premium Golden Diapason.
Today we found out that the album was awarded Golden Diapason a prize I have never had. This is a very special day for us and we are very happy about it.
Ruth Paul: Fantastic! Magazine Musica also awarded 5 stars! And what will you start the new year with?
Marina Rebeka: The new year will start quite devastatingly – with the role of Medea in the production of L. Cherubini’s opera in Milan The Staircase, which was not intended. I had intended to rest, so I had to cancel several concerts, but it’s a role that happens maybe once in a lifetime. The role is extremely difficult, huge, maybe even bigger than Norm. It is not only technically very difficult, because it is very low and at the same time high – it goes in all directions. It is emotionally complex. Medea famously kills both of her children, but that’s not all. From the moment Medea comes on stage, she is there for the entire performance and her character goes through development. This must be done wisely, as she must be versatile.
How to play it all, how to let it all through you? It’s not just about the voice, it’s also about emotions, body plastic, acting. This production is a really big challenge for me,
for, first, Medea before me The Staircase only Maria Kallas has sung. No one has sung it since Callas. Perhaps this play was also afraid to be staged. It is difficult to sing such a part by such a legendary artist as Maria Kallas. This role is a really big step for me.
