Marin Cilic at the Australian Open 2024
It has been ten years since Marin Cilic achieved the greatest success of his career at the US Open. After beating Roger Federer in the semifinals and Kei Nishikori in the final, the Croatian was able to lift the winner’s trophy in 2014. Two more Grand Slam finals were to follow, as well as a 1000th title in Cincinnati.
Recently, however, Marin Cilic has been struggling with injuries and has had to postpone his comeback week after week. The now 35-year-old is outside the top 1000 in the world rankings. His last match on the ATP Tour was at the beginning of the season in Rio de Janeiro.
But now Cilic wants to try it again. At the ATP Challenger tournament in Manacor, and in Rafael Nadal’s academy. Cilic received a wildcard there. And after a 6:4 and 6:4 win against lucky loser Alberto Barroso Campos, he is in the round of 16. Duje Ajdukovic, the number five in the event, is now waiting there.
Tournament favorite Damir Dzumhur had to give up in the first round. Yannick Hanfmann, the number two, was able to win his opening match against Jiri Vesely.
