Marika Gombitová: The Uncrowned Queen of Slovak Pop and Her Extraordinary Singing Talent

The judges gifted her with an extraordinary singing talent. In addition, the uncrowned queen of Slovak pop, Marika Gombitová, who celebrated her sixty-seventh birthday on September 12, has played piano and guitar since childhood. Later she shone as part of several bands, she experienced a happy and fruitful period especially with the group Modus. She was and is extremely successful on the solo track as well. He is currently looking forward to two January concerts in Prague.

Music was in the family, in which Marika Gombitová she grew up in Turany nad Ondavou in eastern Slovakia, always a place of honor. Her father played the violin, the church organ and also sang. She also liked singing the most out of all the artistic fields she was involved in. Her great role model in this regard was the American blues and rock singer Janis Joplin.

She got her first engagement in the amateur group Matador, in which she sang as a thirteen-year-old with her brothers. During her studies at the Secondary School of Engineering in Košice, she worked in the band Profily and in the Košice dance orchestras of Júlia Olajoš and Juraj Szabadoš.

From a troubled student to a star at nineteen. But Sagvan Tofi is fulfilling his dreams even today

Then in 1976, when she accepted an offer from Ján Lehotský to join his group Modus, she became a professional singer. It was an extremely lucky choice for her – alongside the aforementioned Janek Lehotský and Let’s look at Žbirkou they formed a strong interpretation trio, which, thanks to their original repertoire, paid for the brand of the highest musicianship quality. The group released several records and in 1977 won with the song Smile Bratislava lyra. In addition, she gave concerts at home and abroad.

At the same time, Marika Gombitová also recorded her two regular albums – Girl in the Rain (1979) and My Little Story (1981). A blessing from heaven for her was, in addition to other recognized musicians, the poet and lyricist Kamil Peteraj, with whom they created her style combining rock, pop, chanson and poetry. As a soloist she then recorded on Bratislava lyre further notches, when in 1978 she won gold with the song Študentská láska in a domestic and international competition.

A year later, she won silver for the presentation of the ballad Vyznanie, with which she won in 1980 (together with the song I want to share with you) at the Intervize International Song Festival in Sopot, Poland.

In the same year, she played the main role in the TV musical Neberte nám princeznú, in which she was partnered by Miro Žbirka, from which the songs Šaty and Tri slova come from. Incidentally, with Miro Žbirka, she also sang the hit V slepě uličkách from 1980 (later also Nespáľme to beautiful v nas and Tajnosľubná).

But then came the shock when, on November 30 of the same year, she became paralyzed due to a traffic accident. The Czech media then senselessly spread the information that she had withdrawn into seclusion, stopped communicating with journalists and fans, that she had finished giving concerts and releasing records.

Marika Gombitová did not give up

On the contrary, she showed her indomitable will when, half a year after the tragic moment that confined her to a wheelchair, she performed again at the Bratislava Lyra. Just a month before the festival, Marika was transferred from the hospital bed to rehabilitation institute in Kladruby. Immediately after the aforementioned Lyra recital, she returned to Kladruby and stayed there for another six months.

From the starry heights to the dark bottom. Michal Penk had a talent from God, he threw it away

Twenty-five active years followed, during which she sang 134 songs (for 58 of which she wrote the music herself), released seven solo albums (for example, on the album Ateliér duše, which she recorded with Yours truly, she also included a duet with Karl Gott Neznámy pár), completed more than 150 concerts and 114 television appearances. In 2016, she was one of the guests of Meky Žbirka’s Road To Abbey Road tour.

Marika Gombitová is currently preparing for two concerts in Prague’s O2 arena, which will take place on January 16 and 30 next year. “Of course I will miss them the most Karel Gott, Miro Žbirka and Vašo Patejdl. I sang beautiful duets with them and they were my great friends. Not only colleagues,” said the singer.

He continues to live in Bratislava, but he always returns to his eastern Slovakian birthplace. “It’s nice here! I enjoy nature, mountains and forests here immensely. My three dogs keep me company – Láska the Bichon, Majky the Maltese and Bella, who was found on the street,” says Marika Gombitová, who is a living example that a song doesn’t just have to be sung, but can also be experienced.

Too fragile? Iveta Bartošová could be crazy, but she was not suited to show business

She won many awards as Singer of the Century or Woman of the 21st Century. Her song Vyznanie won the Hit of the Century poll and is probably the most emotional song in the history of Slovak pop.
