Marijn Devalck wins international film prize: “A big pat on the back” | showbiz

FilmIn our country ‘Adam & Eva’ will only officially premiere on Friday, but in Italy the film has already won prizes during the International Movie Awards in Rome. The print won three statuettes, and the one of ‘best male lead’ went to Marijn Devalck (70). “The film was made with love for the craft, not for the money.”

‘Adam & Eva’ tells the story of the dejected professor Adam (Bob De Moor) whose zest for life is sparked when he falls in love with Eva (Peggy Schepens), a local beauty. In the film, Adam also gets to know the sick lord of the castle Michel (Marijn Devalck) in the hospital, the beginning of a beautiful friendship that is central to the film.

Regional product

It wouldn’t have mattered if the film would have looked completely different. Nicolaas Rahoens, the director of ‘Adam & Eva’, first had Devalck in mind for the role of the professor. “I just thought the role of lord of the castle suited me a bit better. My character’s role is also smaller, making it more suited to my schedule.” Despite his other projects, Marijn was ultimately unable to refuse Rahoens’ offer. “I agreed because it is a regional product and because it is made by people who love the profession.”

‘Adam & Eva’ is indeed a local production, because the film was made in the Flemish Ardennes. The movie has been around for a long time too. The release was originally planned for 2020, but due to corona, the premiere was postponed for a year. According to the ‘FC De Kampioenen’ actor, it is remarkable that this Flemish production is now winning prizes abroad. “To be honest, I wasn’t aware of the International Movie Awards in Rome, but it’s true that the film is noticed at European level.” Marijn Devalck is therefore very proud of what he and his colleagues have achieved. “It is indeed a big pat on the back.”

In addition to the award for ‘best male lead’, ‘Adam & Eva’ received two other statuettes. The film also received the prize for ‘the best ensemble’ and the print can also call itself ‘the best comedy’ in Rome. Whether the film will be popular in our country remains to be seen. ‘Adam & Eva’ will officially premiere in Ostend on Friday, but the print was shown in the Flemish Ardennes, where it received a positive reception. “People like to see it. It is a spontaneous and unpretentious event. It is made with love for the profession and not for the money. And that is what the film radiates.”
