“It was really a big fire, but they all stayed pretty quiet here,” says Marieke, among other things. “You shouldn’t think it’s happening in Giethoorn, or in your own backyard. But in Italy they are used to something. So it’s very close to where we sleep, because this is the whole area where they make olive oil.”
Fortunately, the fire has now been extinguished and despite it being close, Marieke ‘slept like a log’. All’s well that ends well. Hopefully she can now enjoy a peaceful holiday again.
