Twelve years after the release of her eponymous album, Marie Denise Pelletier launches a new opus of original songs which in some way highlights her 40-year career.
“All occasions are good to celebrate,” says the singer in an interview with Le Soleil.
Beyond her prolific career, it is love that she wanted to celebrate with this twelfth studio album.
“There are many people who despair as they age, but life has surprises in store for us when we are open,” says the woman who met her true love at 55.
His meeting with Normand is also evoked through the songs Le coeur desîles and Je t’ai sais.
A little romance, a lot of joy and a strong feeling of fulfillment permeate the twelve new titles of Sous ma femme skin.
The performer didn’t think he would record new songs at this point in his career.
“Unfortunately, in Quebec, older singers no longer appear on commercial radio,” she maintains.
In any case, it is to make the stage that Marie Denise Pelletier appropriates songs.
The warm encounters with the public who followed her during the Pour une histoire d’une soir tour encouraged her to return to the studio. Moreover, his tour partners, Joe Bocan and Marie Carmen, also lent their voices for this project.
Tailor-made songs
When word began to circulate that Marie Denis Pelletier was preparing a new album, she was quickly inundated with proposals from songwriters.
However, the singer had a fairly clear idea of what she wanted for this project.
“I asked for custom-made, which is quite exceptional,” reveals the artist.
She collaborated with Catherine Major, Michel Rivard, Robert Charlebois, Louis-Jean Cormier, Corey Hart, Martine Pratte, Sylvie Paquette and several other songwriters to achieve her goals.
In addition, the performer covers L’ Shoulder Magnetic, a song by his friend Mario Chenart who died of brain cancer in 2019.
“He played with words. It’s a love song that he wrote to his lover,” explains Marie Denise Pelletier.
She also recorded a song that Claude Gauthier had given her almost 25 years ago, When love wants to die, and which she had somewhat misplaced.
“Luckily, I found the hard copy. 25 years ago, we didn’t digitize all that,” argues the singer.
Marie-Denise Pelletier had already performed this piece on stage, but had never recorded it.
“When Love Wants to Die is very universal: it speaks of the loss of a love, but also of the loss of a loved one,” she explains.
On this album which speaks of love, but also of femininity, the Quebecer takes the time to pay tribute to the struggles of women from other countries with the song Her name was Masha. Masha as in Masha Amini, this student of Kurdish origin who died in detention after being arrested by the Iranian moral police in 2022.
No vacation before 2025
After the Pour une histoire d’une soir tour which will end on January 24, the singer will immediately begin rehearsals for her new show, the first performance of which is scheduled for February 8, 2024 in Lavaltrie.
The Quebec public will have to wait until November 3, 2024 to see Marie-Denise Pelletier perform her new songs on stage. These will obviously be accompanied by some of the many successes that have punctuated his career.
“I’ve recorded over 150 songs, so let’s just say I’m spoiled for choice! » asserts this great voice from Quebec.
She will be accompanied on stage by her faithful musicians, pianist Benoit Sarazin, multi-instrumentalist Marc Papillon and musical director Claude Pineault. Bassist and double bassist Carl Mayotte – whose fourth album, Carnaval, was also released this Friday – completes this team.
“I caught him before he left for the four corners of the world,” enthuses the artist who does not hesitate to praise the talent of this musician from Quebec.
The singer, who will not have the opportunity to take a vacation with 2025, is happy to be able to count on the support and presence of her lover.
“We are inseparable,” happily affirms Marie-Denise Pelletier.
