Mariah Carey is not the ‘Queen of Christmas’: trademark application rejected | Economy

Singer Mariah Carey may not call herself the one and only ‘Christmas Queen,’ she reports BBC news. The United States Patent and Trademark Office rejected a trademark application for that name after another artist objected.

Carey had a big hit in 1994 with the Christmas number All I want for Christmas is you. Since then, his name has been inextricably linked to holidays. A trademark allegedly gave the American singer the right to prevent others from using the title ‘Queen of Christmas’ on music and merchandise.

The singer previously applied for a trademark on the title last year. Also, he wanted to register the abbreviations “QOC” and “Princess Christmas”. Those applications were also dismissed after lesser-known singer Elizabeth Chan filed a lawsuit against Carey’s plans.

Chan says she’s also called the “Christmas Queen,” because she’s released a new Christmas album every year for ten years. “I think no one should monopolize something like Mariah is trying to do,” Chan said in an interview with the American magazine Variety. “Christmas is for everyone. It’s nobody’s property.”

Because Carey and her attorneys failed to respond to Chan’s lawsuit in a timely manner, the trademark was not granted.
