Russia reserves the right to reciprocal measures in response to the expulsion of two Russian diplomats from Bulgaria. This is stated in an official statement by the spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova.
She recalls that the Bulgarian authorities have taken such a démarche for the fifth time in the last year and a half and again without providing any evidence. According to her, these actions were preceded by a noisy campaign of the prosecutor’s office in Bulgaria to expose in the state power structures a group of people who allegedly worked for Russia.
Thus, in accordance with the well-known scenario, the ground was prepared for the expulsion of our diplomats, says Zaharova.
The spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that another escalation of anti-Russian “espionage” in Bulgaria recurred on the eve of the parliamentary elections on April 4 and against the background of the outbreak of Russophobia in the West, especially in the United States.
“Again, we call on official Sofia to end its participation in the” witch hunt “, harming the national interests of Bulgaria itself. It is high time to return to the constructive bilateral agenda, which is much more natural for Russian-Bulgarian relations, “said Maria Zakharova.
A few days ago, the Russian embassy in Bulgaria demanded that all speculation in connection with the case against the six espionage suspects reach the court. The diplomatic mission expressed confidence that “the trial will be conducted on a depoliticized, impartial and objective basis and in strict compliance with the norms of Bulgarian law and international law.”
