María Vázquez to Receive Prestigious Honor at Cans Festival: Pedigree of Honor Award

The Cans Festival, which will celebrate its twenty-first edition between May 21 and 25, will grant its highest distinction to the actress María Vázquez, one of the most outstanding performers in Galician cinema in recent years and who was nominated for the Goya for Best Actress this year for her work in Matria, a film for which she received the Biznaga de Oro for Best Actress at the Malaga Festival. The awarding of the prize, Pedigree of Honorwas agreed upon by the assembly of the Arela Cultural Association, organizer of the festival, which in the last edition went to the actor Luis Zahera.

“A highly versatile performer, María Vázquez stands out for her exhaustive work in the construction of characters, to whom she always seems to transmit her own energy,” the Cans Festival values, which recognizes in this actress her role as a “socially committed person and “her contribution to transforming society from a feminist perspective, as well as her vindication of rural origin.”

The festival also takes into account that, despite the impact she has achieved as an actress, she continues to participate in short film projects, as well as the enormous connection that the actress established with the people of the village of Cans the times she visited the festival. .

Thus, with the award of the Pedigree Honor Award, María Vázquez will place her star on the Torreiro de las Estrellas de Cans on Friday, May 24, alongside other honorees such as Jorge Coira, Luis Zahera, Luis Tosar and Margarita Ledo. She is the fourth actress to be awarded the honorary award, an award held by Mabel Rivera (2006), María Pujalte (2011) and María Bouzas (2014).

Silver chimps

Tatán will receive the “Pepe Puime” Silver Chimpín, “a recognition of a very loved person in the profession and always willing to collaborate with the Cans Festival throughout its history,” the organization of the event indicates.

Another Chimpín, the “Divina Campos”, will fall to Luis Davila, who since the first edition of the Cans Festival established a tradition, making a vignette about the festival every year, dimensioning and enhancing the elements of the contest, such as jalpóns, cortellos or chimpíns , mixed with ideas about legendary cinema films or well-known actors and directors. In addition to the award, the festival will have an exhibition around his work with Cans as inspiration.

And finally, every year, the Cans Festival awards another of the Silver Chimpíns to a neighbor whose selfless work contributes to the celebration of the event, and which this year falls to Fermina Fernández, who for several years has collaborated by providing their testimony to the Cans 303 Project, where collective documentaries are made that recover the memory of the village in areas ranging from smuggling to closed bars, fairs or traditions. Mrs. Fermina worked throughout her life as a house seamstress and as a traveling saleswoman, always combining it with the hard life of work in the fields, and with her prodigious memory that she allows herself to record year after year.
