“She Said”, a drama by German director Maria Schrader about two journalists’ denunciation of the Weinstein scandal, caused a stir at the New York Film Festival.

German director Maria Schrader (57, “Unorthodox”) and her team received thunderous applause Thursday evening (local time) at the New York Film Festival for their drama “She Said” about the presentation of the Weinstein scandal by two journalists . Also on stage were lead actresses Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan, as well as New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor.

Journalists are intimidated

Twohey (played by Mulligan) and Kantor (Kazan) released their revelations about the sexual assault of film producer Harvey Weinstein in October 2017 after difficult research. The film shows reporters meeting intimidated victims, visiting Weinstein employees, joking with lawyers, being followed up and discussing with supervisors whether the story can be published.

A Pulitzer Prize for revelations

Together with Ronan Farrow of “New Yorker” magazine, they won a Pulitzer Prize for their revelations. Allegations of abuse against Weinstein made by dozens of women sparked the global MeToo movement in 2017. The producer was finally sentenced in New York in 2020 to 23 years in prison for rape, among other things. He is currently on trial in another sexual assault trial in Los Angeles.

Weinstein’s victims were in attendance at the premiere

For the New York Times investigative article, actress Ashley Judd and other women publicly described Weinstein’s abuse for the first time. Judd and other activists attended the New York premiere of “She She Said”. Following its theatrical release in mid-November in the United States, the film will also hit German theaters in December.
