Maria Sakkari joins Caroline Garcia in siding with the WTA and refuting Elena Rybakina’s recent statements in Tokyo . The Kazakh clearly attacked the WTA for not granting her a bye during the first round of the Japanese tournamentwhile Caroline Garcia and Maria Sakkari were entitled to a so-called performance bye because they played on the other side of the world in Mexico.

Before this statement Rybakina withdrew not due to injury but to protest the decision and to avoid sanctions since she had already confirmed her presence in Japan.

The French woman also thinks that the decision to grant her and Sakkari a bye was legitimate: “The trip between Mexico and Japan is very long and, given the time difference, we lose two days.
I think this rule is necessary because we have to play in specific circumstances. This rule was also adopted in Beijing and Wuhan.
