As we know, the word “charity” comes from the Latin “caritas” and means “virtue of loving God above all things and your neighbor as yourself”. In this month of June, Corpus Christi is celebrated, as a party that exalts above all brotherly love, charity. And, reading the definition that M.ª Emilia gives of herself, the anagram of Cáritas comes to mind; As you also know, they are those four little hearts that come together and express the need to pool efforts and that seem to say: “mother, grandmother, Catholic and in love with Christ. And the result cannot be another: love, affection, esteem for others.
23 years ago, María Emilia was appointed diocesan director by D. Francisco Cases, bishop of our diocese at that time. When D. Ciriaco Benavente arrived, she became an episcopal delegate until 2012 when, for family reasons, he resigned from her position, but never her availability to continue working in Diocesan and Parochial Caritas.
From grandparents, parents and teachers, he learned generosity in giving to others from childhood; but his life would immerse her even more from his work with immigrants. Seeing her life trajectories up close, her difficulties, the uprooting of her, in short, the difficult fight for her survival was the straw that broke the camel’s back and M.ª Emilia fully accepted the appointment of her as director. It is clear that, along the way, friendly hands appeared that helped him in this delivery: D. José Carrión, D. César Tomás, Pilar Ferrándiz, José María Fuentes, Isabel Aranguren… and many others who, with their encouragement and on All with her testimony, they reinforced the good foundations that this woman already had from her birth in an environment of “people of the Church”.
With all this trajectory, M.ª Emilia noticed that she was receiving with her dedication to others, much more than what she contributed. When love and work for one’s neighbor are unified with the daily effort as a mother, as a grandmother, as a committed Christian, one can only think of the presence of a superior Spirit; that same Holy Spirit that makes you see more clearly every day the deep gratitude that we have to give to God at all times and despite the difficulties that living entails.
From this little corner, M.ª Emilia tells the young people to have a single moment of silence in their lives to listen to the call of Jesus and give themselves to their neighbour: this will be their greatest source of happiness and interior satisfaction. With that gift to brotherly love, they will not only find the peace that she has found, but they will also become rich and receive much more than they can give.
In this month of June, of brotherly love for the celebration of Corpus Christi, your life testimony will be encouragement for many.
Thank you, Maria Emily
