The writer María Dueñas makes the leap to television with The Artists: First Traces. Although he had already participated in the adaptation of some of his successful novels, such as El tiempo entre seams, this is the first time he has part of an idea originally conceived for the small screen.
The work materialized through a participatory process together with a team of scriptwriters in which the work “flowed” until it took the form of a dramatic comedy. “I did not dare to label it as comedy from the beginning but, as it has progressed, it has taken on more of that tinge. (…) In fact, I always wanted to write a humorous novel and I’ve already made an incursion of this type into audiofiction”says the author, leaving in the air a personal longing that could be forged in one of her upcoming literary works.
Recorded in Spain, Mexico and South Florida (USA), The Artists: First Traces is the story of the young Mexican Cata (Ximena Romo), an art expert who meets the Spanish antique dealer Yago (Maxi Iglesias) while he works in a restaurant with harsh working conditions, and then he decides to change his life.
criticize stupidity
The chemistry between them, together with the need to find a way out of stagnant lives, lead them to form a tandem full of talent, audacity and audacity to defraud millionaire buyers with fake works of art.
The series reflects an attractive, addictive plot, full of humanity, unexpected twists and a lot, a lot, irony. The different critical winks about “outrageous behavior” of compulsive consumption and “stupidity”, which we see “every day on the news”, are distributed throughout the plot of this production.

The problems, dilemmas and dilemmas of the protagonists they also question the viewer with an intra-story that shows “life itself, with its lights and shadows”and make their theme something timeless.
For his part, Maxi Iglesias comments that he did not even think twice when he was offered the role. “When they told me that Los Artistas was the first series written directly by María Dueñas for television, without going through the book and created by herself, I thought: ‘What more could you ask for?’”, says the Physics actor or Chemistry, a declared fan of Dueñas.
“The head of the production company showed us some images that he had from pre-production and I remember thinking: ‘This is the first time in Spain that a series has been filmed outside the country in natural settings, at least with that level of production. I was very impressed by what María Dueñas had achieved”, says Iglesias.
