The first trailer for the second installment of the Joker (Joker Folie a deux) continues to give a lot to talk about several weeks after its premiere. In fact, after seeing the first minutes of footage and knowing part of the story that we will enjoy very soon in theaters, not only have different theories been created around the role of Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga) but even the words of Margot Robbie on the actress who will pick up the witness she left in Suicide Squad about that character.
As if the interpreter and producer of Barbie already knew something in advance, the Australian spoke both this year and in 2022 about everything that Lady Gaga could contribute to that role in the good hands of those responsible for the first installment of the Joker. And it must be said that her words were premonitory.
“Oh, my God. It’s going to be fantastic. I can’t wait to see it… In fact, I haven’t talked to her about it. I almost, like, don’t want to know and be surprised when I see the movie,” the actress explained in the 2024 Golden Globes about the new dimension that the figure of Harley Quinn would take on in the skin of another artist.
And she had no doubt that it was going to be something revolutionary: “I think she will do a great job. I feel very excited. All I could hope for Harley is that she would become one of those characters that, like Batman or Hamlet, passes from one actor to another.”
Margot Robbie’s vision left us somewhat confused at that moment since a priori we are talking about very different films that are not part of the same plot. And in fact that was where the young performer got it right. Because those responsible for Joker, who already gave a twist to the story of the greatest villain in the DC universe, have done the same again with her inseparable sentimental companion.
Folie à deux gives its name to a disorder in which the same psychiatric symptoms develop at the same time as another person, usually linked to the other with some type of relationship. And we suspected that Lady Gaga was going to be the therapist of an Arthur Fleck locked up in the Arkham mental institution. But everything indicates that this will not be the case and that her story of love and addiction does not begin between doctor and patient but between two equals whose story promises to generate and cause chills.
Now, Todd Phillips, the director of Joker: Folie à Deux can give life to a new protagonist whose story can be part of cinema history. Starting October 4 we will see where Harley Quinn and Arthur Fleck take us.
