A film based on the classic board game Monopoly is preparing to pass go – with Margot Robbie’s production company set to produce it.

Decade-Long Development Finally Reaches Production Stage

The Monopoly film has been in development for more than a decade, according to industry insiders.

Robbie’s Production Company Takes the Lead

It was announced on Wednesday that Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, will produce the Monopoly film. Hasbro Entertainment, a part of the American toy company, will also be a co-producer.

Successful Track Record for Robbie’s Company

Robbie’s production company has had recent success with films such as Saltburn and last year’s hit Barbie, in which Robbie also starred. Barbie was the highest-grossing film of last year, raking in $1.38 billion globally.

In a February interview with Variety, the 33-year-old actress expressed a desire to create more films with a similar impact to Barbie but also emphasized the importance of exploring new original and bold ideas in collaboration with talented filmmakers and the financial support of a major conglomerate.

Industry Figures Positive about the Film’s Potential

Adam Fogelson, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed great enthusiasm about the project and believed it had the potential to become the next blockbuster hit.

Zev Foreman, head of film for Hasbro Entertainment, viewed the iconic game as a rich storytelling opportunity, highlighting the incredible platform Monopoly provides.

A Brief History of Monopoly

Monopoly, the iconic board game that has entertained generations of children, was patented in 1904 by Lizzy Magie, an American feminist. Originally called the Landlord’s Game, it has since evolved into the global phenomenon we know today as Monopoly.

However, it wasn’t until thirty years later, during the Great Depression, that Monopoly gained mainstream popularity when it was first marketed in the United States. An unemployed salesman from Pennsylvania is credited with inventing the game.
