Margot Robbie Reflects on Oscar Nominations Disappointment for ‘Barbie’ Movie

In a recent interview, Margot Robbie opened up about her feelings regarding this year’s Oscar nominations, expressing her disappointment after not receiving a nomination in the lead actress category for her role in the highly successful film, “Barbie.” Despite the snub, Robbie remains grateful for the opportunities she has had in her career.

During a special SAG-AFTRA screening, Robbie shared her perspective on the situation, stating, “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed.” She also expressed pride in the impact that “Barbie” has had on culture, saying, “We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact.” Robbie believes that the film has already achieved that goal and more, which she considers to be the ultimate reward.

Although Robbie did not provide further comment on the matter, it is clear that she values the experience and the positive response that “Barbie” has received. The film, released in July of 2023, became a massive success, earning nearly $1.5 billion globally. This achievement made director Greta Gerwig the first solo female director to have a billion-dollar movie under her belt. It is worth noting that “Barbie” was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery, which also owns CNN.

The absence of Gerwig’s nomination for best director was equally surprising to many. However, she did receive recognition in the adapted screenplay category alongside her husband and co-writer Noah Baumbach. Robbie expressed her support for Gerwig’s directorial work, stating, “Obviously I think Greta should be nominated as a director because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing.”

Despite the disappointment of not receiving a lead actress nomination, Robbie was recognized as a producer for “Barbie” in the best picture category. The film received a total of eight Oscar nominations, including nods for supporting actors Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera. Both Gosling and Ferrera expressed their disappointment in Gerwig and Robbie’s omissions, with Gosling stating, “To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

In an interview with Variety, Ferrera echoed Gosling’s sentiments, saying she was “incredibly disappointed” that Gerwig and Robbie were not individually nominated. However, despite the disappointment, Robbie maintained a positive outlook on this year’s Oscar discourse. She acknowledged the incredible year for all films and the talent that has been recognized.

As Robbie reflects on the Oscar nominations disappointment for “Barbie,” it is evident that she values the impact the film has had and remains grateful for the opportunities she has had in her career. While the absence of nominations may be disheartening, Robbie’s positive attitude serves as a reminder of the importance of celebrating the achievements and impact of a film beyond awards recognition.
