Margot Chevrier would make her first attempt at 4.65 in the pole vault final.
But something went wrong in the jump. The French lost all speed before she reached the crossbar and fell free straight down.
There she landed badly with one foot in the pole vault box. Chevrier lay down and screamed out her pain, while the television images showed how her foot ended up at an unnatural angle – with a protruding leg.
– No no no. Oh, what a pain to watch, said commentator Niklas Nord in SVT.
Chevrier to hospital
The pole vault final was paused while Chevrier received treatment on the court. She eventually left the arena on a stretcher and was then rushed to hospital, according to Canada’s CBC.
Molly Caudery won the pole vault competition, which suffered several interruptions.
Canadian Alysha Newman was forced to withdraw after an injury in the warm-up earlier this week. The Finnish star Wilma Murto withdrew from the competition already after clearing her entry height.
