Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The rupiah exchange rate against the United States (US) dollar weakened against the middle rate of Bank Indonesia (BI). The country’s currency is sluggish in trade spot market.
On Tuesday (30/3/2021), the BI middle rate or the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate / Jisdor reference rate was at IDR 14,481. Rupiah weakened 0.33% compared to the previous day’s position.
On the spot market, the rupiah is also red. At 10:00 WIB, US $ 1 was equivalent to Rp.14,450 in which the rupiah had weakened 0.07%.
Domestically, the rupiah was burdened by the high demand for foreign exchange from corporations. Towards the end of the quarter, the need for foreign exchange was high due to dividend payment obligations, maturing debts, and so on.
So many rupiah released to be exchanged for foreign currency, especially US dollars. This seasonal factor causes the rupiah to weaken.
However, not only domestic factors, external sentiment also did not support the rupiah. The situation on the world financial markets is currently uncertain, as seen from a number of major Asian currencies which also weakened against the US dollar.
