Margarita Larios knows every corner of the Big Apple, as she has lived in New York for 50 years already. But like any other immigrant, his income was fraught with uncertainty. This Mexican mother arrived in the country when she was 13, alone, without documents and working in whatever God wanted her to do..
Our reporter Damaris Díaz, from Union 41he talked to her about the difficult process it meant to change and appear in New York at such a young age.
As if that wasn’t enough, working as a single motherwith the aim of supporting his family and being able to take care of his six children.
“It was difficult. I was 13 years old and undocumented. The current economic support is not for the ‘illegal’,” said Mrs. Margarita.
“I was almost hidden, with six children, and I sent them to work from a young age, after school. “I’m proud of them, because they’re very good,” she said with a broken voice.
Now promoting Mexican culture in New York
In addition to working day and night, the immigrant needed emotional strength, so she decided to participate in church activities and joined some non-profit organizations, such as Mexican Consortium.
“My children needed Mexican culture. I wanted them to learn it”he said.
Margarita Larios not only received support during such activities, but she found ways to turn her love of cooking and talent in sewing into a stand out.
She even made pieces that found their way into the hands of singer Thalía.. “I made her handkerchiefs for her baby shower, then I saw the show ‘El Gordo y la Flaca’ and I realized they were for her,” said the Mexican mother.
The woman has received several recognition for his work with the community and his contribution to art and gastronomybut he makes sure that his greatest legacy is to keep the traditions of his country alive.
